The first place west division (35-3-2-1) Soo Greyhounds hit the ice at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario to host the fourth place midwest division (16-16-2-5) Owen Sound Attack in a Ontario Hockey League regular season match – up.
Sinking his 29th on the season, Boris Katchouk gives the Soo a 1 – 0 lead with Taylor Raddysh and Morgan Forst adding the contributors on Katchouk’s goal. Hayden Verbeek nets his 15th of the season 3:39 into the middle stanza with the Greyhounds second of the contest with Joe Carroll and Cole MacKay setting up Verbeek’s goal. Rasmus Sandin cuts across the front of Owen Sound netminder Mack Guzda with 1:02 remaining in the period to send the Greyhounds into the second intermission 3 – 1. Barrett Hayton and Jack Kopacka registered the helpers on Sandin’s fifth of the season.
Katchouk adds to the lead 3:19 into the final period on a Soo power play with Morgan Frost and Hayton notching the contributors on Katchouk’s power play marker. Aidan Dudas crosses the Greyhound blueline pulls the Attack within three at 7:14 of the period with Kevin Hancock and Nick Suzuki setting up the Owen Sound power play goal. 23 seconds past the halfway mark, Ethan Szypula finds Markus Phillips at the 10:23 mark of the third on an Owen Sound power play. With 1:03 left in the game, Morgan Frost scores his 25th of the season on a Soo power play to give the Greyhounds a 5 – 3 win. Raddysh had the assist on Frost’s goal. Greyhound goaltender Matt Villalta turned away 20 of 22 shots in the Soo’s 36th win of the season.
The Greyhounds will host the fourth place central division Mississauga Steelheads on January 13th in Sault Ste Marie in a 7:07 p.m start.
