On June 17th in junior action, the (2 – 1) Sabercats hosted the (2 – 1) Sudbury Gladiators at Superior Heights in their last OFC Football regular season match – up at home. The Sault was coming off a 52 – 21 road win in Vaughan on June 10th over the Rebels.
Quarterback Jordan Robinson – Wright sends a seven yard pass to Matt Jackson for the Sabercat opening touchdown at 6:31 of the opening quarter. Marc Aceti catches the extra tow for the Sault. 3:58 into the second quarter, Sabercat Robinson – Wright finds Aceti for a two yard pass to give the Sault a 12 – 0 win. Robinson – Wright adds two points when he fires a pass to Matt Jackson in the Gladiator end zone to bring the lead to 14 – 0. At 9:20 of the quarter, Evan Scoli catches a Sudbury interception and carries the ball for 43 yards to the Gladiators end zone to increase the lead to 20 – 0. Aceti catches a Robinson – Wright pass for an extra two.
Nick Pagnotta scores the Sault’s third touchdown of the game to add to the Sabercats lead on a five pass from Robinson – Wright. With 41.1 seconds left in the half, Robinson – Wright runs the ball for a 16 yard touchdown carry to send to the Sabercats into halftime up 38 – 0. Jackson caught the extra two for the hosts. With time ticking down, Gladiator Liam Cousineau caught an eight yard pass from Sudbury quarterback with 20.8 seconds left in the game to end the game 38 – 8.
Quarterbacks Robinson – Wright and Ronan Derbowka threw for a combined 252 yards in the Sabercats win with Robinson – Wright completing eight on 22 attempts while Derbowka attempted 11 and completed six for the Sault. Mitchell Dewar caught three passes on 65 yards with Jackson catching four passes for a total of 68 yards and Pagnotta made three catches for 91 yards. Pagnotta led the offence with 15 carries and rushed 77 yards for the Sault. Trevin Rimkey led on defense for the Sabercats with four solo and two assisted tackles followed by three solos and four assisted tackles by Carter Bonin. Finishing the game with two solos and five assisted tackles for the Sault was Zac Martin.
Next up for the junior Sabercats will be in Barrie on June 24th when they meet the Huronia Stallions in a 2:00 p.m kick – off. The Sault defeated the Stallions 48 – 8 in Sault Ste Marie on June 3rd.
