The Sault Major Hockey Association’s Soo AAA Thunderbird Minor Midgets are in Oshawa, Ontario over the January 5th – 7th weekend to take part in the 2018 Oshawa Challenge along with the Brampton 45’s, Hamilton Jr Bulldogs, Sudbury Wolves, Toronto Young Nationals and the hosts, the Oshawa Minor Generals.
In game one at 2:00 p.m on January 5th, the Thunderbirds took on the hosts, the Minor Generals in their first game of round robin action. Hunter Rheaume, Brock Santa Maria and Michael Neveau had the goals in the Soo’s 5 – 3 loss to Oshawa Friday afternoon. At 8:00 p.m in game two, the Bulldogs took a bite out of the Thunderbirds with a 7 – 1 win over the Thunderbirds with captain Michael Chaffay sinking a shorthanded goal for Soo.
“We started off strong in game one, but a couple mental lapses cost us a late goal in the second and a goal on the first shift of the third. Last night again a pretty good first half of the game and trailing 2 – 1 late in the second we have a bad turnover that leads to a goal and it was an uphill climb from there. Today we need to manage the puck better and play to our strengths and when we get our opportunities we have to be hungrier around the net” said Soo coach Jamie Henderson.
Next up for the the Thunderbirds, the Soo will will meet the Toronto Young Nationals in a 12:30 p.m start and the Brampton 45’s at 8:15 p.m to finish round robin action.
