The Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program is pleased to announce that Jessica Jenkins has joined the Algoma Thunderbirds wrestling team for the 2016-17 season, their four year of competition in the OUA and CIS.
“The coaching staff, along with Varsity Athletics, is extremely pleased to have Jessica as a Thunderbird,” said Algoma wrestling Head Coach Trevor Manchester. “Jessica will add to our growing program and bring a level of intensity and competitiveness that will lead to success at the OUA/CIS level.”
Jessica Jenkins is a 5’2″, 119-pound wrestler out of Belle River, Ontario, who competes in the 51, 52, 53, and 54-kilogram weight classes. Jenkins is currently completing her secondary school diploma at St. Anne Catholic Secondary School and competes with the St. Anne’s Wrestling team. Jenkins has had an impressive wrestling career to date, which includes that accolades of OWG, WECSSAA, and SWOSSAA gold medals, national silver and bronze medals, and an OFSAA bronze medal. She is also a four-time World Champion in karate and a second degree blackbelt.
She will be studying in Algoma U’s Bachelor of Social Work program.
“From the moment I stepped out of the car when I came early last October to tour the school, I knew Algoma University was the ‘it’ I was looking for,” begins Jenkins. The welcoming faces, small class sizes, single dorm rooms, exceptional athletic facilities, and hometown feel were just bonuses. I wanted a place where I could push myself to limits I didn’t know existed and make history… Algoma is my perfect opportunity and after meeting Coach Trevor, I knew he would be the one to help push me to those limits! I am proud to be a Thunderbird!”
The Algoma Thunderbirds fourth season in the OUA will begin in October of 2016.
