Cancer Awareness Weekend a Success On and Off the Court

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - JANUARY 26th, 2010): The Algoma University Thunderbirds went undefeated in their four games this past weekend, but it was their off-court success that they might be most proud of. Over 700 fans attended Friday and Saturday's contests, and over $1300 was raised for the fight against cancer.

Wearing his symbolic yellow warm-up jersey, made famous by American Lance Armstrong's Livestrong campaign for cancer awareness, Algoma's Patrick Murray was happy with the way the way the weekend turned out. "Overall it was a very successful weekend which was bigger and better than we expected.  We would like to send out a big thank you to our event sponsors Boston Pizza, Wireless Wave and Russell Athletics." Together with his coach Thomas Cory, Murray organized the event in memory of his father who he lost to prostate cancer 4 years ago.

Algoma University Athletic Director Mark Kontulainen echoed Murray's remarks. "We really want to thank everyone who came out to support the event, the Algoma Thunderbirds, as well as the visiting teams from  Redeemer University College and Niagara College. We are proud of our financial contribution to the Cancer Society, and hope that we have generated more community awareness about prostate and breast cancer. We look forward to hosting this event again next year."

The Algoma Thunderbirds opened the weekend with convincing victories against the Redeemer Royals of Ancaster, Ontario. The women won by a score of 57-27 while the men easily cruised to a 90-50 win over the Royals. The women completed a weekend sweep by defeating Niagara College 54-51, and the final game on Saturday saw the Thunderbirds men's team pull off a 93-73 victory against Niagara.

The Thunderbirds return to home court action on Sat. Jan. 30th versus Mohawk College.  The women tip-off at noon followed by the men at 2:00 pm.
