Seven girls from the Algoma Wrestling Club will be travelling to New York City to compete in the Gotham City Girls Wrestling Championships from April 21st to the 24th.
Algoma Wrestling Club members Morgan Leonard, Ashley Campioni, Jeannete Wessel, Lettie Bumbacco, Paige Simon, Emily Duschene and Amy Gillespie will be attending the Gotham City tournament which is quickly becoming one of the premier events in women’s wrestling. Last year’s tournament attracted teams from Mexico, Italy, Canada and over 20 states from the USA. This year’s tournament is expected to grow even more.
The Algoma Wrestling Club earned an invitation to the tournament based on their results from the 2016/2017 season. The Algoma Wrestling Club finished third of 27 girls teams at the Ontario Championships, crowned two provincial champions, Morgan Leonard and Rebekah Trudel, and had numerous other provincial medalists and top six finishers.
According to the Algoma Wrestling Club coaches, the girls team is poised for big things.
“This is a very strong group of girls right now.” states Algoma Wrestling Club coach Brent Fryia. “We’ve had a lot of very good female wrestlers come out of the Sault, but this young group is one of the best groups we’ve had.”
Head coach Trevor Manchester echoes that sentiment “We are graduating some good girls this year, but the young girls coming up have the potential to be very, very good. They have put in a lot of hard work already and if we can expose them to some international level wrestling early in their careers their only limits will be how far they want to take the sport.”
The Algoma Wrestling Club has started a GoFundMe page to raise money to offset some of the costs of this trip. If you would like to contribute to their campaign, HELP.
