Greyhounds Take Bell Challenge Cup with Win Over Wolves

In an afternoon matinee in Sudbury, Ontario, the west division 2016 – 2017 champions, the (45-15-3-1) Soo Greyhounds took to the ice to meet the (24-32-7) Wolves in Ontario Hockey League action. The Greyhounds and Wolves met for the sixth time in the 2016 – 2017 season with Sudbury entering Sunday afternoon’s match – up with seven points and the Soo with five points.

At 4:41 of the opening period, Sudbury’s Alan Lyszarczyk sank the first of the game to give the Wolves a 1 – 0 lead with Sault Ste Marie, Ontario native Drake Pilon and Reagan O’Grady adding the assists on Lyszarczyk’s goal. Bobby MacIntyre finds the back of the net for his 27th of the season to even the game 1 – 1 of the Greyhounds at 5:36 of the period with Hayden Verbeek and Mac Hollowell setting up MacIntyre’s tying goal. Scoring his 33rd of the season and giving the Soo a 2 – 1 lead was Greyhound forward Boris Katchouk at the 15:04 mark of the second with Jack Kopacka and Blake Speers notching the contributors. With bounce of the offensive rink boards in the Wolves end, Greyhound David Miller fires a goal from the middle of the offensive zone to bring the Soo’s lead to 3 – 1 at 17:44 of the middle stanza. Gustav Bouramman and Otto Makinen drew the helpers on Miller 21st on the season.

On the 33rd shot of the contest at 7:10 of the third period, the Soo’s Kopacka increases the Greyhounds lead to 4 – 1 with captain Speers and Katchouk registering the helpers on Kopacka’s 29th on the season. With the Soo breaking down the right side of Wolves netminder Jake McGrath, Tim Gettinger fires his 30th of the season to give the Greyhounds their 22 shorthanded goal of the 2016 – 2017 season and bring the lead to 5 – 1. At thirteen minutes even, Sudbury’s Owen Lalonde sinks the final goal of the game and finds the back of Greyhound Joseph Raaymakers’ net with Shane Bulitka and Dmitry Sokolov adding the assists on the Wolves second of the contest. Raaymakers made 23 saves in the Soo’s 5 – 2 win over the Wolves in the afternoon matinee in Sudbury.

The Greyhounds will play their final three games of the season this upcoming week with heading to Saginaw to meet the Spirit on March 15th, game time in Saginaw will be a 7:05 p.m puck drop before than returning home for the final two at the Essar Centre against the Spirit on March 17th at 7:07 p.m and rounding out the 2016 – 2017 regular season in Sault Ste Marie when they host the London Knights in an afternoon matinee on March 19th in a 2:07 p.m start.
