In their first game of a three – game road trip, the first place west division (43-5-2-1) Soo Greyhounds took their six game winning streak into St. Catharines, Ontario on February 8th to face the second place (26-17-4-3) Niagara Ice Dogs in a regular season Ontario Hockey League match – up.
At 15:39 of the of the opening period with the Greyhounds tenth shot of the game, Morgan Frost sinks his 31st of the season to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead with a pass from Rasmus Sandin. On a Greyhound penalty shot at 1:19 of the middle stanza, the Soo’s Boris Katchouk backhands a goal behind Ice Dog Stephen Dhillon to bring the visitors lead to 2 – 0 with Katchouk’s 34th of the season. With a behind the back pass from Barrett Hayton, Frost scores his second of the contest at the 17:28 mark of the period to increase the lead to 3 – 0. Katchouk drew the other helper on Frost’s goal.
Finding the back of Niagara’s net with his 18th of the season, rookie Barrett Hayton gives the Soo a 4 – 0 lead with 1:01 into the third with Sandin and Katchouk setting up Hayton’s goal. 4:57 into the final period, Wlliam Lochead finds the back of Greyhound goaltender Matt Villalta’s net for the Ice Dogs. Oliver Castleman and Kirill Maksimov had the contributors on Lochead’s goal. Elijah Roberts and Johnny Corneil draw the assists on Sam Miletic goal to pull Niagara within two at 14:26 of the period. With 46 seconds remaining with a Ice Dog unassisted goal, Massimov sinks the final goal of the game. Greyhound goaltender Matt Villalta turned away 32 of 35 shots in the Soo’s 4 – 3 win over Niagara.
Game two of the southern road trip for the Soo will be in Erie, Pennsylvania on February 10th in a 7:00 p.m start against the Erie Otters. The Soo handed the Otters a 4 – 3 loss in Sault Ste Marie on February 4th in OHL regular season action.
