In their second to last regular season game of the season, the first place (27-30-7-2) west division Soo Greyhounds hit the ice for the second time in two days against the fifth place (27-30-7-2) Saginaw Spirit with this match – up in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario at the Essar Centre on March 17th in Ontario Hockey League action. The Saginaw took a 2 – 1 win over the Soo on March 14th for the Spirit only second win in seven meetings over the Greyhounds during the 2016 – 2017 OHL regular season.
Only six seconds into the third, Saginaw’s Brady Gilmour finds the back of Greyhound netminder Matt Villalta to give the Spirit a 1 – 0 lead with Marcus Crawford and Markus Niemelainen adding the assists on Gilmour’s goal. With the Spirit shorthanded from a too many men penalty, Bobby MacIntyre fires his 28th of the season to even the game 1 – 1 for the Greyhounds at 15:32 of the period. Barrett Hayton and Morgan Frost had the assists on MacIntyre’s power play goal.
With Soo captain Blake Speers feeding Jack Kopacka from behind the back of Saginaw goaltender Brendan Bonello’s net, the Greyhounds took a 2 – 1 lead on Kopacka’s 30th on the season. Conor Timmins registered the other contributor on Kopacka’s goal. With Bonello on the Spirit bench for the extra attacker at 18:35 of the final period, Tim Gettinger finds the empty net to the insurance goal on Gettinger’s 31st of the season with Mac Hollowell adding the helper on Gettinger’s goal. Soo goaltender Villalta made 27 saves in the Greyhounds 3 – 1 win over the Spirit.
The London Knights will come into Sault Ste Marie to the Essar Centre on March 19th to face the Greyhounds in their final regular season game of the 2016 – 2017 season in an afternoon matinee with a puck drop at 2:07 p.m.
