Greyhounds Make It Twelve Straight with Win Over the Petes

Sitting one point back of the west division Sarnia Sting, the west division (20-3-2) Soo Greyhounds began their three game road trip on November 30th in Peterborough, Ontario against the third place east division (14-12-0-1) Peterborough Petes in Ontario Hockey League regular season action. In their only other meeting off the season, the Greyhounds overpowered the Petes in Sault Ste Marie on November 25th with a 8 – 3 win over Peterborough.

With a scrum in front of Pete’s goaltender Dylan Wells, Ryan Roth sinks the Soo’s first goal of the game and his sixth of the season 5:18 into the game to give the Greyhounds a 1 – 0 lead. Keeghan Howdeshell and Jack Kopacka had the helpers on Roth’s power play goal. Peterborough’s Zach Gallant finds the back right corner of Greyhound Matt Villalta’s net to even the game 1 – 1, Jonathan Ang drew the assist on Gallant’s shorthanded goal at 11:02 of the period. On the Soo’s 12th shot of the game at 11:23, Greyhound captain Jack Kopacka scores the go – ahead goal under Well’s blocker for the go – ahead goal. Rasmus Sandin and Mac Hollowell had the contributors on Kopacka’s 15th of the season. Cole Fraser fires the tying goal from the blueline for the Pete’s at 14:15 of the first with Gleb Babintsev and Pavel Gogolev setting up Fraser’s goal. Conor Timmins walks through Peterborough’s defense for his fourth goal of the season to give the Soo a 3 – 2 lead. Morgan Frost had the assist on Timmins’ goal.

With an odd bounce from the corner, Peterborough’s Jonathan Ang pulled the Petes even 3 – 3 at the 3:13 mark of the second with Alex Black registering the helper on Ang’s goal. Conor Timmins fakes a slapshot to split the Pete’s forward 31 seconds past the halfway mark of the period with Frost and Sandin adding the contributors on Timmins second of the game. Taking a 5 – 3 lead into the second intermission after a goal at 18:14 of the period on a Ryan Roth wrist shot for the Greyhounds. Kopacka and Hollowell added the assists on Roth’s second of the contest. Firing the Pete’s fourth of the game, Korostelev scores a Peterborough goal just below Villalta’s cross bar to close the gap to one at 8:24 of the third. Semyon Der-Arguchintsev and Fraser had the helpers on Korostelev’s goal.

Greyhounds take back their two goal lead with a Morgan Frost goal at 14:20 of the period with Boris Katchouk notching the assist on Frost’s 13th of the season. Eight seconds later Logan DeNoble breaks down the right side to fire the Pete’s fifth of the game to pull Peterborough within one at the 14:28 mark of the third. Korostelev and Der-Arguchintsev adding the contributors. With Peterborough’s Evan Wells on the Pete’s bench for an extra attacker, Barrett Hayton scores his tenth of the season with the Greyhounds 50th shot of the game at 18:56 of the period to give the Soo a 7 – 5 win. Tim Gettinger and Frost drew the helpers. Soo goaltender Matt Villalta turned away 27 of 32 shots in the Greyhounds twelfth straight win.

The Greyhounds will take their 0-0 win into the Rogers K-Rock Centre on December 1st to face the second place eats division (13-7-2-3) Kingston Frontenacs in a 7:30 p.m puck drop.
