Soo Greyhounds Jack Kopacka and Boris Katchouk had inked three year entry level contracts with their respective National Hockey League teams on April 23rd.
After being selected in the second round of the 2014 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection Draft 33rd overall, Soo Greyhound forward Boris Katchouk signed with the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning on April 23rd to an entry level contract. The Waterloo, Ontario native was chosen 44th overall in the second round by the Lightning in the 2016 NHL Draft.
The 6’3” and 19o lbs forward finished the 2016 – 2017 OHL regular season with 35 goals and 29 assists in 66 games while accumulating 46 minutes in penalties. The 18 year old Katchouk was named OHL Player of the Week in November 2016 with scoring four goals and adding two assists in six games ending November 27th. In 11 eleven post – season game in the spring of 2017, the Greyhound forward added another eight goals to his season total and contributing five assists and tallying 12 minutes in penalties.
Boris will join the Syracuse Crunch (Tampa Bay Lightning) affiliate who are even at 1 – 1 in the first round of the American Hockey League post – season.
Greyhound Jack Kopacka has also signed a three year entry level contract with the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League. The 19 year old Metamora, Michigan native had 30 goals and 19 assists along with 16 minutes in penalties in 65 regular season games in 2016 – 2017 with the Greyhounds. The 6’2” and 200 lbs forward has also added five goals and six assists in 11 post – season game in a Soo jersey in 2017. Kopacka was selected 93rd overall in the fourth round of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Ducks.
The Metamora, Michigan native has joined the American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) affiliate who are tied 1 – 1 in the opening round of play offs with the Ontario Reign.
Other Greyhounds who are continuing their 2016 – 2017 season with Blake Speers and Colton White playing in Albany with the AHL Devils (New Jersey), Gustav Bouramman (Minnesota), Tim Gettinger (New York Rangers and Zach Senyshyn is with the AHL Providence (Boston) Bruins franchise for their play off run.
