Greyhounds Even at 1-1 with Firebirds After Loss at Essar

After a 5 – 2 win on March 23rd in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario over the Flint Firebirds, the Soo Greyhounds it the ice at the Essar Centre on March 25th in game two of the west division quarter – final best of seven series in Ontario Hockey League 2017 post – season action.

Flint’s Kole Sherwood fires the opening goal behind Greyhound goaltender Matt Villalta at the 4:35 mark of the first period with a pass from Maurizio Colella to give the Firebirds a 1 – 0 lead. Alex Peters sinks the Firebirds second of the contest at 7:04 of the first with Ryan Littlejohn and Hunter Holmes drawing the contributors on Peters’ goal. 43 seconds into the middle stanza, Nicholas Caamano and Ryan Moore set up Firebird Jalen Smereck goal to bring Flint’s lead to 3 – 0. With the Greyhounds shorthanded 2:57 into the second, Boris Katchouk finds the back of the net for his second of the 2017 post – season with Bobby MacIntyre adding the helper.

At 11:54 of the second period, Firebird Colella picked up the rebound on Villalta to bring Flint’s lead to 4 – 1 with Smereck and Everett Clark registering the assists. With the Greyhounds on a bad line change, Ryan Moore takes the opportunity to sink the visitors fifth of the game with 1:38 left period. Caamano had the contributor on Moore’s shorthanded marker. Scoring his first of the playoffs and pulling the Soo within three was Greyhound Zach Senyshyn at 1:53 of the final period with helpers from Mac Hollowell and Anthony DeMeo. Jack Kopacka sunk his second of the post – season to close the game to two with the Greyhounds third of the game with Katchouk and captain Blake Speers adding the contributors on Kopacka’s goal at 13:42 of the period. With Greyhound netminder Matt Villalta on the bench for an extra attacker, Colella scores an empty netter to even the game 1 – 1 with 1:19 left in game two. Alex Peters drew the assist on Colella’s shorthanded goal.

The Greyhounds and Firebirds head to Flint, Michigan for game three of the west division quarter – final with a puck drop at 7:00 p.m on March 29th.
