Greyhounds Earn Win in Shootout Over Spirit at Essar

After opening the 2017 Ontario Hockey League exhibition season in Saginaw at the Dow Event Center on September 1st with a 4 – 3 loss to the Spirit, the Soo Greyhounds returned home to host the Spirit in a 4:07 p.m after matinee on Sunday September 2nd looking to earn their first win of the 2017 – 2018 OHL season.

Veteran Jack Kopacka fires the first goal of the game at 17:18 of the opening period with a pass from Greyhound Boris Katchouk to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead. With the hosts, shorthanded, Katchouk sends a pass to Morgan Frost five seconds after Kopacka’s goal to bring the lead to 2 – 0. Scoring his second goal of the exhibition season 48 seconds into the second, Saultite Nicholas Porco finds the back of Greyhound netminder Matt Villalta to close the gap to one for the Spirit. Hayden Fowler and Robert Calisti draw the contributors on Zack Trott goals to increase the Soo’s lead to 3 – 1 at the 4:59 mark of the middle stanza. At 14:08 of the second, Saultite Camaryn Baber registers his first OHL point with an assist on Saginaw’s Nate Boomhower’s goal. Danny Katic had the other helper on Boomhower’s goal.

2:33 into the final period, Saginaw’s Cole Coskey evens the game 3 – 3 with a Spirit unassisted marker. Keaton Middleton finds Baber to give the visitors the lead at 12:29 of the period for the Spirit. With an extra attacker for the Soo, Kopacka and Noah Carroll had the contributors on Trott’s second of the contest with 1:28 left in the game for the Greyhounds to send the game into a shootout. After six shooters for each team, Greyhound Calisti finds the back of Spirit goaltender Cameron Lamour’s net to give the Soo a 5 – 4 win.

The Greyhounds will now practice until September 15th when the Soo opens up the 2017 – 2018 OHL regular season in Sudbury against the Wolves in a 7:05 p.m puck drop.
