On March 19th in an afternoon matinee at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the first place (47-16-3-1) west division Soo Greyhounds closed out the 2016 – 2017 regular season against the third place (46-14-3-4) London Knights in Ontario Hockey League action. In the last two meetings, the Soo and London needed overtime to determine a winner along with the Greyhounds season opener going to a shootout with the Greyhounds edging the Knights in the first three match – ups heading into Sunday afternoon’s game.
3:59 of the opening period, Olli Juolevi fires a goal over Greyhound goaltender Joseph Raaymakers’ left shoulder to give the visitors a 1 – 0 lead with Evan Bouchard and Sam Miletic drawing the assists. Boris Katchouk sinks the tying goal for the Greyhounds with his 34th of the season with Zach Senyshyn and Conor Timmins adding the contributors at 7:29 of the first. David Miller finds the back of the Knights net for the Greyhounds second of the game at 15:57 of the period. Noah Carroll and Bobby MacIntyre had the helpers on Miller’s 22nd of the season. JJ Piccinich sends London into the first intermission even a 2 – 2 with the Soo at the 18:41 mark of the first. Max Jones and Mitchell Vande Sompel set up Piccinich’s power play goal.
Only 19 seconds into the middle stanza, Bouchard scores the go – ahead goal for the Knights with Janne Kuokkanen and Cliff Pu adding the assists. Owen MacDonald sends a pass to London’s Max Jones to give the Knights a 4 – 2 lead 48 seconds into the period. Senyshyn pulls the Soo within one with his 42nd of the season at 4:21 of the period with Morgan Frost and Tim Gettinger registering the contributors. Katchouk finds the back of London’s Tyler Johnson’s net for his second of the contest with captain Blake Speers and Gustav Bouramman adding the helpers on Katchouk’s power play goal at 9:32. Speers nets his 15th of the season 4:09 into the third with Jack Kopacka and Katchouk notching the assists. With 2:52 left in the game, Frost sinks the Greyhounds insurance goal for his 20th of the season with Senyshyn and White adding the helpers. Greyhound goaltender Joseph Raaymakers made 17 saves for the Soo to close out the 2016 – 2017 regular season.
The Greyhounds will will open up the 2017 post – season against the Flint Firebirds on Thursday March 23rd in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario in a 7:07 p.m start.
