In game one of the best of three, the Soo Eagles hosted the Elliot Lake Wildcats in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan at the Pullar Stadium in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League post – season action.
Nick Long scores the lone goal for the Wildcats 1:56 into the second period with helpers from Brett Crook and Brett Jacklin drawing the contributors on Long’s goal. Adam Ostrowski finds the back of Wildcat netminder Matt Kostiw’s net to even the game 1 – 1 at 4:57 of the period. Jacob Pamerio and Jake Saxton had the helpers on Ostrowski’s tying power play goal. At 7:28 of the second, defenseman Nick Trecroce fires the Soo’s second of the game to give the Eagles a 2 – 1 lead with Nate Harris and William Casey adding the assists on Trecroce’s goal. With eight seconds left in the period, Trecroce sends the hosts into the second intermission up 3 – 1 with forwards Chris Murphy and Bradley Hofelich’s notching the contributors on Trecroce’s second of the game.
With 3:19 left in the game and Kostiw on Elliot Lake’s bench for an extra attacker, Eagle Chris Lutz gave the Soo a 4 – 1 win over the Wildcats. Gianni Vitali and Brendan Schultz set up Lutz empty netter at the 17:41 mark. Kostiw stopped 32 of 35 shots in Elliot Lakes 4 – 1 loss while Eagle goaltender Kade Phipps turned away 26 of 27 shots in the Soo’s game one win.
Wildcat coach Corey Bricknell told Saultports that “We need to stay out of the box, get pucks and bodies to the net. Tomorrow’s game is a huge one for us.”
“We stuck to our game plan and played a complete sixty minute game. When you get contributions from all 20 guys good things usually happen” said Eagle coach Jim Capy.
