Opening their 2017 – 2018 season with a 5 – 3 loss to the Powassan Voodoos at the Pullar Stadium, the Soo Eagles hit the ice 24 hours later when they hosted the Elliot Lake Wildcats on September 16th in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
Kobe Keller scores the first goal of the game at 5:55 of the opening period to give the Eagles a 1 – 0 lead with Nick Techel and Thomas Dyball adding the assists for the Soo. Techel sinks the Soo’s second of the period at 14:07 of the first with Keller and Christian Bardarson drawing the helpers. With Soo shorthanded 2:03 into the middle stanza, Eagle Jacob Palmerio gives the Soo a 3 – 0 lead with a pass from Jake Lamberty. Giving the hosts a 4 – 0 was Eagle Christian Bardarson 4:51 into the second with Owen Kipke and George Orfanos notching the contributors on Bardarson’s power play goal. Bringing the Soo’s lead to 5 – 0, Kellen Tharaldson finds the back of the Wildcats net at 5:23 of the second. Palmerio and Bobby Price adding the assists on Tharaldson’s power play marker. Techel’s increases the Eagles lead to 6 – 0 at 7:07 of the period with Keller and Kipke registering the contributors on Techel’s goal.
Techel and Bardarson had the helpers on Keller’s second goal of the contest at 11:45 of the period to give the Eagles a 7 – 0 lead. Eagle Lamberty scores the eighth of game at 12:24 of the third with Palmerio and Price adding the assists. With the Soo shorthanded, goaltender Carter McPhail finds Kyle Quinn of the Eagles at 14:27 for the Soo’s final goal of the game. At 8:17 of third and on a Elliot Lake power play, Nick Long and Evan Spencer had the helpers on the Wildcats lone goal of the game when Jacob Kelly finds the back of Eagle goaltender McPhail’s net. McPhail stopped 32 of 33 shots in the Soo’s 9 – 1 win over the Wildcats.
The Eagles return to action on September 23rd at the Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan in a 7:30 p.m puck drop.
