Coming off a 12 – 1 in a midweek match – up on October 18th over the Espanola Express in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, the Soo Thunderbirds returned to action on October 21st against the cross border rival, the Soo Eagles at the Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario native Jacob Palmerio sank the opening goal 4:43 into the first to give the Eagles a 1 – 0 lead. Nick Techel had the lone assist on Palmerio’s goal. Nick Techel finds the back of Thunderbird goaltender Brandon Gordon’s net at the 2:36 mark of the second to bring the hosts lead to 2 – 0. Kobe Keller and Christian Bardarson drew the contributors on Techel’s power play goal. Owen Kipke increases the lead to 3 – 0 on the Eagles second power play goal of the period at 3:15 with Bardarson and Techel adding the helpers. With the Thunderbirds on a power play at 7:36 of the middle stanza, Tyler Malpass pulls the visitors within two with Camaryn Baber and Nicolas Case setting up Malpass’ power play marker.
Only 32 seconds into the final period, Bardarson fires the Eagles fourth of the contest with Brendan Blair and Techel registering the helpers. Alex Acosta and Steven Bellini had the contributors on Braden Robbins goal to close the gap to two at 6:49. Austin Heinrich sank the final goal of the game with 5:20 left with Bellini and Robbins adding the assists. Thunderbird goaltender Brandon Gordon stopped 24 of 28 shots while Eagle netminder Carter McPhail turned away 33 of 36 shots in the hosts 4 – 3 win over the visiting Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds will host the Timmins Rock on October 27th in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario at the John Rhodes Centre at 7:30 p.m while the Eagles meet the Hearst Lumberjacks at the Pullar Stadium in a 7:30 start.
