After a 5 – 2 loss on February 24th in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan at the Pullar Stadium to the seventh place Rayside Balfour Canadians, the eighth Soo Eagles boarded the bus for Elliot Lake on February 26th to face the ninth place Wildcats at the Centennial Arena in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League west division action.
Evan Spencer sank the first goal of the game at 4:40 of the opening period to give the Wildcats a 1 – 0 lead with Jacob Kelly and Brennan Kelly drawing the contributors. David Elford sinks Elliot Lake’s second of the contest at 5:20 of the period with a pass from William Bucsis. Troy Button and Leejay Meguinis set up the Wildcats third goal that was cored by Ty Hannaford at 6:12 of the first to increase Elliot Lake’s lead to 3 – 0. Nate Harris brings the Eagles within two in his 13th of the season at 16:32 of the first with Jake Saxton and Chris Murphy adding the assists. The Soo’s Roman Gaudet finds the back of the Wildcats net for his fourth of the season 11:46 into the second for the lone goal of the period with Bradley Hofelich and Chris Lutz adding the helpers on Gaudet’s power play marker.
Giving Elliot Lake a 4 – 2 lead was Wildcat Curtis Rawn at 6:03 of the third with a pass from Brett Jacklin. Brett Crook fires the final goal of the contest 8:44 into the third with assists from Bucsis and Meguinis to give the Wildcats a 5 – 2 win over the visiting Eagles. Both Eagle netminders Kade Phipps and Jack Deines saw action from the Wildcats with Phipps turning away 4 of 6 shots in 5:20 while Deines made 32 saves for Soo on Sunday evening.
The Eagles will host their cross border rivals, the Soo Thunderbirds on March 3rd at the Pullar Stadium in a 7:30 p.m drop in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan.
