In their first meeting of the 2017 – 2018 season, the Soo Eagles met the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners on neutral ice when the west division Eagles took on the east division Gold Miners in Sudbury at the 2017 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Showcase.
5:55 into opening period, Justin Weinbrenner found the back of the Gold Miners net to give the Eagles a 1 – 0 lead with a pass from Mihali See of the Soo. At 17:16 of the first, William Mizuik finds the back of Soo goaltender Carter McPhail’s net to even the game 1 – 1 for Kirkland Lake, Gabriel Rheault had the assist on Mizuik’s tying goal. Marshal Nikitin fires a pass to Tyler Fyfe for the Gold Miners go – ahead goal on a Kirkland Lake power play at 5:14 of the second period. Scoring the of second of the period, Fyfe sinks his second of the contest at 16:16 of the period to send the Gold Miners into the second intermission up 3 – 1 . Mizuik and Nikitin drew the helpers on Fyfe’s power play marker.
Jake Saxton registers the assist on Kobe Keller’s goal to pull the Eagles within one 2:40 into the final period. 24 seconds later, Kyle Quinn sinks the tying goal at the 3:04 mark of the period to bring the game tied 3 – 3 with Alec Schwab notching the helper. Sinking his fifth goal of the season, Sault Ste Marie native Jacob Palmerio gives the Eagles a 4 – 3 ovetime win over the Gold Miners at 4:41 of the second overtime with a pass from Jake Saxton. Carter McPhail turned away 22 of 25 shots in the Soo’s win in Sudbury.
The west division Eagles will play their second game of the 2017 NOJHL Showcase on October 11th when they face the east division Hearst Lumberjacks in a 11:15 a.m puck drop.
