Cougars Return Home with Two of Possible ACHA Four Points from Grand Rapids

The Sault College Cougars headed out of the road on October 6th and 7th to face the Grand Valley State University Lakers in American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) men’s DIII and women DI action at the Georgetown Ice Arena.

On Friday evening in Grand Rapids, Michigan in men’s action, the Cougars earned one point in a 4 – 3 overtime loss to the Lakers while in a Saturday afternoon matinee in Grand Rapids, the Lakers sank a last minute goal to send in the game into overtime. With less than one minute in the overtime, Grand Valley State University finds the back of the Cougars net to take the win 7 – 6 over Sault College. The men’s hockey program returns to Sault Ste Marie with six out of eight possible points in their first four regular season games of the 2017 – 2018 season.

Cougar coach Mike Hall told Saultsports that “we were successful in securing two out of a possible four points and six out of eight in our first four games.  We let one get away on Saturday but all teams have to learn how to win. We were down on numbers this weekend, but extremely proud of the effort the men put forth. We’re looking forward to this weekend when we will be able to just about dress a full line-up. Too take six out of a possible eight on the road is good start too our season.”

The women hit the ice on Friday evening in their first season of ACHA exhibition play against the DI women Lakers. In a hard fought battle, the women Cougars were shutout 6 – 0 to Grand Valley State University. In game two, Sault College found the back of the Lakers net once in the Cougars 7 – 1 loss.

“I was impressed by how well the girls stayed with the Lakers through most of the two games and never gave up.  Considering the calibre of the Lakers (DI) and the full roster they had we showed that with a few more players we could easily contend every game. I thought our forward Chelsea Dokis who played goalie did a fantastic job facing 112 shots over the two games really kept us in the games” said women’s coach Chad Mousseau.

The men’s program will be back in action on October 14th and 15th when they meet the Schoolcraft Ocelots in Livonia, Michigan while the women will participate in the Sault Ste Marie Women’s Hockey League Early Bird Tournament from October 20th to 22nd.
