After a 33 – 8 loss in Sudbury to the Spartans in week nine of the Northern Football Conference, the (1 – 6) Sault Steelers closed out their regular season on July 30th at home at Rocky DiPietro Field in a 8:00 p.m kick – off against the (5 – 2) GTA All Stars in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
The Steelers would have quarterback Ron Kelly back in the line – up on Saturday evening after being ejected in the first quarter in Sudbury for swearing. The Steelers fell 49 – 20 to the All Stars in week ten of the NFC season with only just over 20 players dressed in the season finale.
Fullback Nathan Edwards finished the game with a total of 27 yards rushing, 17 yards receiving along with two of the three touchdowns for the Steelers. Wide receiver Alonzo Clarke had the other Sault touchdown in the Steelers loss with Clarke receiving the ball four times from Kelly for a total of 79 yards. “We lost against a fast team and if we don’t get guys out its was a winnable game, we just have to get guys in for reps that’s all,” said Clarke.
Edwards told Saultsports that “we had a lot of positives tonight. Ron Kelly threw the ball well. Alonzo had a hell of a game receiving, Steve Hiiemaa ran the ball well tonight. Injures hurt us a lot we were missing most of our o line. Brandon Lewis and Freddie Casselman and Dan Povey stepped up and played out of position and had to play two ways with the short bench. They all played a great game. We just need to work on mental errors and repetition and I think we can go to GTA and knock them out of the play – offs.”
The seventh place Sault Steelers will meet the third place GTA All Stars on August 6th in the NFC quarter – final at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, Ontario.
