In their second last games of the season, the Algoma Thunderbirds took on rival Northern Ontario squad, the Laurentian Voyageurs.
In the women’s game, the Thunderbirds picked up their third win of the season. Algoma jumped out to a lead early on and never looked back, winning, 66-52. Karly Fracalanza led Algoma in the win with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Jamerka Martin had 11 points and Karissa Kajorinne had 10 points. Algoma shot 40 per cent from the field and 89.2 per cent from the line. Kayla Deschatelets had 16 points for the Lady Vees.
“I thought tonight we really grinded it out,” said Head Coach Ryan Vetrie. “We stayed together during the stretches when things weren’t going right. I’m proud of the way we handled ourselves tonight.”
In the men’s action, Algoma battled hard in the first half, going shot for shot, but dropped an 87-64 decision. Ian Nash led Algoma in the loss with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Jermaine Lyle had 10 points and 2 rebounds. The Thunderbirds shot 34.2 per cent from the field. Kadre Gray had 30 points for the Voyageurs.
Algoma has their final game of the regular season on February 18th in the George Leach Centre at 6:00 p.m (women) 8:00 p.m (men) against the Nipissing Lakers.
