Both men’s and women’s Algoma University Thunderbird basketball programs saw action on November 10th and 11th on the hardcourt at the George Leach Centre in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario with their opponents, the Queen’s Qaels on Friday evening and York Lions on Saturday.
In a hard fought loss on November 10th, the seventh place west division (0-4) Thunderbird men fell to the fourth place (2-1) east division Gaels in a 97 – 89 loss. Algoma headed into halftime with a nine point deficit 46 – 37. In the second half, the Thunderbirds outscored the Gaels 52- 51 in Algoma’s loss. Ian Nash (Fourth Season/Community, Economic & Social Development/Detroit, MI) led Algoma with 23 points (3 assists/2 rebounds) while Cailum White (Business/Administration/Victoria, BC) and Nathan Riley (Third Season/Geography/Kitchener, ON) contributed for a total of 34 points. White sank 21 points (3 rebounds along with Riley adding 13 (7 assists/11 rebounds) for the Thunderbirds.
On November 11th, the men’s program earned their first regular season win of the season with a 73 – 71 nailbiter over the eight place (2-2) east division York Lions. Nash sank 27 points (2 assist/3 rebounds) to his weekend total in Algoma’s win. Reng Gum (Fifth Season/Business/Administration/Surrey, BC) contributed 11 (3 assists/8 rebounds) in the win along with White adding eight (1 assist/2 rebounds) on Saturday evening.
In women’s action on Friday at the George Leach Centre, the (0-4) Thunderbirds tipped off against the second place east division (3-0) Queen’s Gael’s in OUA action. Karin Cole (Fourth Season/Mathematics/Lincoln, MI) sank 19 points (4 assist/7 rebounds) in Algoma’s 72 – 59 loss. Jamerka Martin (Fifth Season/Social Worker/Milwaukee, WI) and Marlee Ball (Third Season/Law & Justice/Waterdown, ON) sank a total of 20 points for the Thunderbirds with Martin scoring 11 (3 assists/3 rebounds) and Ball (4 rebounds) adding nine for the Thunderbirds.
In Algoma’s 86-46 loss to the York Lions on November 11th in Sault Ste Marie, Cole (6 rebounds) found the basket for nine points while Cassandra Cushnie (First Season/Law & Justice/Markham, ON) and Sydney Resch (Fifth Season/Business Administration/Guelph, ON) added eight points Cushnie’s 1 rebound and Resch 2 rebounds in the Thunderbirds sixth loss of the 2017 – 2018 OUA season.
Next up for the (1-5) men’s and (0-4) women’s Thunderbirds basketball program will be on November 17th and 18th when they play host to the Lakehead Thunderwolves eight place (0-4) men and second place (3-1) women. Game times will be 6:00 p.m and 8:00 on Friday while again at 2:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m on Saturday afternoon respectively.
