Algoma Thunderbird Andrew Johnstone Named OUA Second Team All-Star

The Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program and Algoma University are pleased to announce that first-year goalkeeper Andrew Johnstone has been named an OUA Second Team All-Star.

“This is a big step for our program to have a player on the OUA All-Star Team, it shows that we can attract and produce the level of player required to break into such a privileged category,” said men’s soccer Head Coach Neil Ovey.

Johnstone is a first-year player from Barrie, Ontario. Wearing jersey number 31, Johnstone had 46 saves in his inaugural year with the Thunderbirds, 14th overall in the OUA regular season. Standing at 6’1” and 175 pounds, Johnston graduated from East View Secondary School and played soccer with the Wildcats. He is an Ontario Youth Soccer League Champion and Quebec Series Champion.

“Andrew is in his first year at Algoma, and has adapted well to the OUA. His performances this year have been solid. His ability to organize and communicate not only with his defensive unit but the entire team during game time has been valuable. He trains well and brings a positive attitude to training and strives for perfection. We don’t just look to recruit technical ability we also need strong minded characters to accept the challenges of being at a unique University and program within the OUA. Andrew has accepted that challenge.”

Johnstone is currently enrolled in Algoma U’s four-year Bachelor of Business Administration program and is receiving a scholarship to help fund his studies.

Johnstone is the second Algoma Thunderbird to be named to an OUA All-Star team. In 2015, Algoma wrestler Natasha Doroodian was named to the OUA Second Team All-Star for her winning a silver medal at the OUA Championships.
