AAA Midget Greyhounds Eliminated from 2017 GNML Post Season

On February 25th and 26th in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario in AAA midget play, the Soo Jr Greyhounds hosted the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves in Great North Midget League post – season action with the Wolves coming into town holding a 2 – 0 lead in the best of five series.

6:15 into the opening period and on an unassisted Greyhound goal, Camaryn Baber fires the first goal of the game to give the Soo a 1 – 0 lead. Tyler Nott finds Greyhound Parker Morgan at the 12:51 mark of the period to bring the hosts lead to 2 – 1. At 15:05 of the first, Glenn Therrien pulls Sudbury within one with a pass from Alex Rodrigue. Baber scores his second of the game 24 seconds into the middle stanza on a Soo power play with his second unassisted goal of the game. 23 seconds later, Steven Bellini and Nolan Ford set up the Greyhounds fourth of the game on Baber’s hat trick goal to increase the lead to 4 – 1. Three seconds before the halfway mark of the period, Dale Armstrong brings the Greyhounds lead to 5 – 1 with a Soo unassisted marker. On a Sudbury power play, Matt Dokis – Dupuis sinks the Wolves second of the game at 12:42 of the period with Joel Mongeon adding the helper.

On an unassisted Wolves goal with 4:34 left in the second, Ryan Fourneir brings Sudbury within three. Bellini sends a pass to forward Lucas Theriault 54 seconds into the third to give the Soo a three goal lead for the Greyhounds. Wolves Therrien and Rodrigue had the assists on Parker Savard’s goal for Sudbury’s fourth of the game at 9:05 of the period. Dokis – Dupuis notches his second of the contest on Subdury’s fifth at 18:59 of the third with Rodrigue adding the helper. Baber cements the Soo’s win with his fourth of the game with eight seconds left on an unassisted goal for the Greyhounds. Goaltender Garrett Boyonoski earned win in the Greyhound’s 7 – 5 victory over the Wolves.

After the win, Greyhound coach Kevin Panco told Saultsports.com that “I think we played well for 40 minutes. Too many undisciplined penalties nine in total. We need to play 5 on 5 hockey and keep our momentum going for 60 minutes. Cam Baber really stepped up had a great game for us. Hopefully this win keep us going for tomorrow.”

On Sunday afternoon, the Greyhounds and Wolves were back in action at the John Rhodes Centre with the series at 2 – 1 for Sudbury. With no scoring in the first, Hunter Chiblow sinks the opening goal of the contest for the Wolves at 7:58 of the second with Sudbury’s Dokis – Dupuis drawing the assist on Chiblow’s goal. Jacob Burton fires the second goal for the visitors 1:27 into the third with Dokis – Dupuis and Rodrigue adding the contributors. Burton and Rodrigue had the helpers on Dokis – Dupuis goal 5:44 into the period to bring Sudbury’s lead to 3 – 0. With Greyhound netminder Ryan Cook on the bench for the extra attacker, Parker Savard finds the empty with a Wolves unassisted goal with three seconds left in the game.

With the 4 – 0 shutout loss in Sault Ste Marie on Sunday afternoon, the Soo Jr Greyhounds were eliminated from the 2016 – 2017 GNML post – season.
